When Church 180’s pastor Paul Hobson was mulling over what church might look like if it started from scratch, little could he have imagined the answer would be a drive-in church in Paignton during a global pandemic.
“Back in January, I had a conversation where we said, ‘What if we just closed everything down and started again, asking God, what do you want us to do?’ By March it had happened, and everyone was rushing to learn how to do things online.
“Initially, we’d run church from a camera in our lounge, because fortunately our worship band is mainly made up of family. But then we saw that Matt Timms in Newquay had done a one-off drive-in church and very flippantly I said to my wife ‘we could do that’.
“We sent a message to our local counsellor asking if we could run a service in the council car park, but he was quite negative. He didn’t feel the council would agree to it because he was struggling to get the outdoor market in Torquay open.
