...I had given you the sermon on the subject of the soul earlier too. But you forgot that. Out of my immense love for you, I have come to show you the path again.

In the Vishnupurana, a sacred scriptural text, description of an inspiring incident is given. The incident relates to the time when Nidaagh, son of Sage Pulastya, returned to the ashram of his father after performing the pilgrimage of several holy places. He began to share his experiences with his father. At that moment, the “mind-born-son” of Lord Brahma, Sage Ribhu, a realised Soul, arrived in the scene. Nidaagh offered him reverential salutations and then began to share the experiences of his pilgrimage with him as well.

Afterwards, with a feeling of disappointment, Nidaagh said, “Oh, revered Sage, even after performing pilgrimage of so many holy places, my mind is not at peace. The feeling of renunciation has of course kindled in my inner being. But I am unable to experience the realm of bliss.” Sage Ribhu listened to his words of disappointment and said, “Oh, Nidaagh! What type of renunciation are you talking about? Explain to me in detail.”

Expressing his feelings with a heavy heart, Nidaagh submitted before the Sage thus: “Revered Sage! I have developed the feeling of renunciation towards this body. I have understood that this human body, besides being perishable, is insignificant and worthless. In this abode termed as the body, the chief called ego resides. This body is also the dwelling of many animals called sense organs. These animals always push us and propel us towards negative actions. A monkey of desire roams around in the veranda of this abode. Thus, I have no attachment for this body. But the problem is that despite knowing this body to be perishable, I am unable to experience peace of mind.”

Nidaagh stood before Sage Ribhu with folded hands and made a humble submission, “O revered Sage! Please guide me. Please tell me the procedure through which I will be able to achieve true happiness and bliss.”

Having listened to the fervent appeal of Nidaagh, Sage Ribhu was touched to the core. Calming him down, he said, “O worthy disciple! I will provide solutions to all your doubts. I will treat your mind suitably.” Elucidating his points, the Sage said, “The craving of the Soul cannot be answered by wealth, or by associating with friends and relatives. By residing at the sacred places too, a human being cannot achieve supreme bliss. The only procedure to revel in peace is to merge with the Supreme Consciousness.”

Nidaagh: But revered Sage, how is it possible to merge with the Supreme Consciousness? How does one achieve that state?

Sage Ribhu: The best way is to get blessed with the Supreme Knowledge through the grace of a Satguru. Meaning, be blessed with Brahm Gyan. That will solve all your problems and mitigate sorrows.

The advice by Sage Ribhu kindled another inquisitiveness in the inner world of Nidaagh. His next question was, “Revered Sage! What is this Brahm Gyan? Kindly make me understand.” The Sage was pleased with the question of Nidaagh. He gave further details about Brahm Gyan thus– “Brahm Gyan means to “know” Brahma; i.e. to own the practical vision of Brahma. Only through the Divine Eye is it possible to have the practical vision of Brahma.”

Sarvagam satchidaanandam

gyanachakshurnireekshate

Ajnaana chakshurnikshate

bhaaswantam bhaanumandhavat

(Mahopanishad, 4/80)

Meaning, one can see the Supreme Lord through the Divine Eye. Just as a blind man cannot see even the brightest sun; similarly, in the absence of the Divine Eye, despite having the two physical eyes, a man cannot visualise the Lord Almighty. Therefore, to behold the Divine Lord, one must acquire the Eye of Knowledge.

Nidaagh: On being blessed with Brahm Gyan, will all the dualities within the inner world cease? Will all the confusions come to an end?

Sage Ribhu: Undoubtedly!
