The Sony FE 50 mm f/1.2 GM was introduced worldwide on March 16, 2021. It is the 12th G Master lens from Sony. G Master lenses are Sony’s top-of-the-line lenses designed for their full-frame E-mount camera bodies. 50 mm focal length is great for weddings, landscapes, fashion and street photography, and is useful for most kinds of general photography. Besides, the fast f/1.2 aperture makes it a great lens when light levels are low.
Design & Build Quality
Immaculately finished and looking every bit a pro lens, the Sony FE 50 mm f/1.2 G Master (GM) lens is very well crafted. The outer body is made from metal and engineering plastic. Dust and moisture-resistant seals are provided for all buttons and rings. The aperture ring is clearly marked in 1/3 stops all the way from f/1.2 – f/16. The ring also has an ‘A’ position. When set to ‘A’, the apertures can be set via the command dial on the camera body. Filter size is 72 mm and the lens is made in Thailand.
The Sony FE 50 mm f/1.2 GM is constructed with 14 elements in 10 groups that include three Extreme Aspherical (XA) lens elements to minimise chromatic aberrations. As per Sony, CA is further reduced to a minimum “with the advanced optical design including the latest simulation technology”. The focussing elements are divided into two independently controllable floating groups which are controlled by four XD Linear Motors. This arrangement helps to autofocus the lens precisely, very quickly and quietly. To control flare and ghosting, especially in back-lit situations, certain lens elements are coated with Sony’s Nano AR Coating II. The front element has a fluorine coat applied to it that helps to mitigate fingerprints and dust/water/oil and other contaminants from adhering to it. As mentioned earlier, all buttons and rings have dust and moisture-resistant seals. The lens uses internal focussing and hence the length does not change as you focus the lens.
Note: If you hold the lens in your hand and apply a forward/backward tilting movement, you may feel as if something is loose within the lens. This is not a defect. As you move the lens, the floating lens elements shift within the lens, causing that particular feeling. Once the lens is attached to the body and the camera is switched ‘ON’, you will not notice any such thing.
