My grandfather was a photojournalist in Poland. He documented events, sports and politicians, and in his spare time he photographed his grandchildren. Before I was born he photographed my elder sister, who happened to have Down’s syndrome. She was about one year old and sat on my mum’s lap at the kitchen table, while exploring a Polish cookbook. The black-andwhite photo – genius in its simplicity – drew me into my sister’s almond-shaped eyes.
