"I am passionate about drawing, and I see that monochrome photography has a great relationship with graphite and charcoal. I have often heard the phrase "taking photography is drawing with light," I believe photography with black and white reaches its maximum expression.
When one has been doing this exercise for a while, one begins to see the shapes and how the light falls on them; everything else is unimportant; it is a way to learn to know the essence of shapes and the moments in which the light produces a unique scene.
Much of my work is documentary, the daily life of my people, and the energy that I perceive every day; I aim to express the tough and challenging life. Black and white is also a reflection of this; it has helped me to transmit the drama. I think we live in monochrome now, and it couldn't be any other way. - Yosvany Martínez
