WHAT IS AESTHETIC PHOTOGRAPHY AND HOW TO USE IT?
Asian Photography|October 2021
You’ve probably heard the term “aesthetic photography” bandied about by influencers or other artists. But what does it all mean? At the end of the day, we all want to capture beautiful photographs and have an impact on our viewers in some way. The majority of photography is created to evoke emotion. Photos should make people think, feel, and even question, whether via beauty or thinking. This post will teach you all you need to know about aesthetic photography, or how to make attractive images while maintaining your unique style.

What is Aesthetic Photography?

Aesthetic is described in the dictionary as “concern with beauty or the enjoyment of beauty”. There are some aspects you may add to your images to make them more attractive to the human eye in order to produce beautiful pictures.

Aesthetic photography is concerned with the creation and analysis of compositional aspects such as tone, colour, and contrast in order to create an appealing or aesthetically acceptable image. It is, in essence, the production of beauty via photography.

Why Aesthetics Matter in Photography?

Not all pictures are visually appealing. It doesn’t matter what your photographic style or subject matter is; it won’t always be attractive. And it doesn’t necessarily have to be visually appealing. Aesthetics in photography, on the other hand, is all about beauty.

Now, beauty may be divisive, since, as the old adage goes, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. So, while we may disagree on what beauty is, there are a few fundamental ideas that most photographers agree on when producing an attractive appearance in photography. This is why beautiful photography is essential. It keeps the spectator wanting more, gazing at the image, and enjoying it. It captures and maintains their attention.

A landscape photographer, for example, photographing a mountain at sunrise with soothing hues of pinks and oranges with a small fog drifting over the hills over lush green mountains would capture the spectator and maybe earn the landscape photographer a photo sale.

What’s the Difference between Style and Aesthetic?

Aesthetic photography and style are founded on the same concepts, yet there are some important distinctions. Let’s have look at them:

Photography Style

• It is primarily concerned with the technicalities of camera settings that go into how you photograph.

• The camera lenses you select, as well as the camera body.

• Where you position your focal point and how much depth of field you employ are important considerations.

• Whether you shoot on film or digital.

Photography Aesthetic

• Aesthetic photographs are more concerned with how the spectator feels and how the photographs seem.

• The habit of consistently photographing the same genre or subject.

• Your editing process is crucial in this case. Do you apply the same effects in all of your aesthetic photos?

• Creativity and composition, such as putting your subject in a certain location or utilising well-chosen horizontal lines, enhance the beauty of your photos.

• Your work’s general composition generates art forms or attractive visuals.

• How do you examine photos before planning aesthetic qualities?

• Choosing a subject to elicit an emotional reaction.

Gestalt Theory

Gestalt theory discusses how the sum of any given item is greater than the sum of its components. When considering aesthetic pictures, this should be highlighted. To make aesthetically attractive photographs, you must develop your own sense of editing choices and composition in order to build the portions of specific photos that are lovely.
