Tips, Ideas and Techniques for Amazing Night Photography
Asian Photography|October 2021
This post is jam-packed with night photography ideas. Many photographers are worried of shooting at night. Because photography is all about light, shooting at night might be difficult when you’re sitting in the dark.

This post will cover various concepts and night photography techniques to keep you motivated if you are seeking for support and inspiration. Consider night photography as a means to tackle your technical anxieties and experiment with your photographic abilities. We will assist you in preparing for night photography photos and making the greatest use of your photo subjects and exposure settings.

The exposure settings for each of the photo topics below will vary, but if you’re seeking for some general go-to settings for shooting at night, start with these:

• Set your shutter speed to 1/15th of a second or less.

• Set the ISO to 6400.

• Finally, use a lens with an aperture of f/2.8 or greater.

If your aperture does not open extremely wide, you may need to modify the shutter and ISO more to achieve the desired effect in your night photography.

1. Capture night city scape

Capturing the night sky with city lights is a challenging method to put your night photography ideas to the test. New York and Paris are two of my favourite cities to shoot at night. These cities are well-known for their stunning evening landscape, architecture, and street lights, as well as being among the most photogenic in the world. You may radically change the vibe of the city by using long exposure settings. When shooting a city at night, prepare a shot list before leaving the house; it’s easy to get lost in major cities, so it’s best to organise your photo locations ahead of time. Consider several perspective angles and compositions that would work well in low light.

Arrive at your site before nightfall to find the finest spots for the great evening photo. When it comes to achieving appropriate exposure for night photos, photography techniques differ greatly. The most essential thing, though, is to carry a camera that is better suited to shooting at night. For example, a camera with a big sensor, a camera with greater ISO capabilities, and a lens with a wider aperture, such as f/2.8, will provide you more control over your subjects. It is also critical that your camera be set to full manual mode for night shooting. You may need a tripod as well, although for urban photography, you may be able to rest your camera on a stable wall or adjacent bench.

2. Capture light trails

Light trail photography is one of the most popular evening photography concepts. These colourful effects, similar to light painting, are generated when a photographer sets their camera to a slow shutter speed, such as 1/30th of a second, to make long exposures. They cause lengthy streaks of light to appear across the image. Consider how you may create moving light effects utilising traffic lights, automobiles, and rushing trains to give a wow element to your evening street photography.

Camera Settings to Shoot Light Trails

• Set the shutter speed to 1/10th to 1/40th of a second.

• Set your ISO as low as possible: try ISO 100. Shoot in RAW to acquire more detailed images and to catch topics that will be easier to edit afterwards.

• Set your aperture to f/8 to f/11 to ensure that your subjects are entirely in focus with a shallow depth of field.
