Mumbai: Doctors say the issue of steam inhalation-related scalding warrants urgent awareness. According to plastic surgeon Dr Vinay Jacob, the burns may be superficial, but they do involve rushing to a hospital and repeated visits for dressing.
At Masina Hospital, Byculla, which opened its burns OPD two months ago, unit head Dr Arvind Vartak said there have been three cases of scalds. “There is an increase no doubt, surprisingly in adults too.”
The rise has been noticeable at National Burns Centre, Airoli, too. Head Dr Sunil Keswani said the numbers have doubled from 4-5 scald burns in pre-Covid times. “Cases started rising since May with fake WhatsApp messages that steam helps in killing the virus,” he said. “The burns would be in the abdomen, genital area and thighs.”
