New Delhi: A parliamentary panel, headed by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, has expressed concern over lack of government data on the number of internet shutdowns in India or their effectiveness in achieving the purpose for which they were imposed.
In its report on the ‘Suspension Of Telecom Services/Internet And Its Impact’ tabled in Lok Sabha on Wednesday, the Standing Committee on Information Technology pointed to absence “absence of parameters” to decide the merit of shutting down the internet during certain times, saying there is no clear-cut definition of what constitutes public emergency and safety.
