Then suddenly, the coach whistles and calls him to sit on the benches while he substitutes him for another guy... He thinks it happened so that he doesn't burn out on the field, and is reassured to be sent back into the game as soon as he catches a breath or two. He’s sitting on the bench, waiting to be looked at while he is only being looked over.
Minute after minute as the game inches towards its end, the player keeps getting his hopes high, only to be disappointed in the end. The game’s up, someone else scored the winning goal and you just saw from the stands. Now, that is exactly what happens when you start getting benched or as they say ‘sidelined’ in your relationship.
