IMD: Caused By Cyclonic Air, Wet Thurs On Cards
Richa Pinto

Mumbai: December began on a wet note for Mumbaikars, with two new marks being set. While the city on Wednesday recorded its second-highest 24-hour rainfall ever for the month, the unseasonal showers sent the maximum temperature plunging by 9 degrees Celsius to its second-lowest for December in a decade.

An IMD scientist attributed the rains to a cyclonic circulation over southeast Arabian Sea and the adjoining Lakshadweep which now lies over south-east and east-central Arabian Sea. The rain is expected to continue on Thursday, the IMD said.

On Wednesday, in the 12hour period ending 8.30pm, the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded 41.6mm of rain and Colaba 43.2mm. The highest December rainfall of 53 mm was recorded in 2017 owing to Cyclone Ockhi moving close to the city’s coast.

Ashton Robinson Cook - Meteorologist

Ashton Robinson Cook always knows when a tornado, hurricane, or winter storm is coming. It’s his job to know. As a meteorologist, he analyzes weather data to figure out where and when storms are likely to hit. Typical weather forecasting tools can look only up to a week ahead. But Cook has developed software called WeatherDeep that can make predictions up to two months in advance. Cook was the first African American man to earn a PhD in meteorology at the University of Oklahoma and also earned the 2017 American Association of State Climatologists (AASC) Dissertation Award for his research on tornadoes.

.240 WEATHERBY MAGNUM

The .240 Weatherby Magnum gets little respect. Knowledgeable varmint hunters will spend a lot of dough to build up a custom 6mm-284 or one of the variations of the 6mm-06 wildcat rounds to get the ballistic features already available in a .240 Weatherby Magnum factory rifle: flat trajectory, good performance in wind and the ability to anchor larger game more reliably if called upon to do so.
