Sindhu keeps date with Tai

PV Sindhu tamed her recent tor-mentor Pornpawee Chochuwong21-14, 21-18 in the pre-quarterfinals of the BWF World championships in Huelva, Spain on Thursday. On another fine day for Indians, former world No.1, Kidambi Srikanth closed in on his first medal at the Worlds with a 21-10, 21-15 win over Lu Guang Zu of China.

In the quarterfinals, the world No.14 Indian will face world No.28 Mark Caljouw of The Netherlands. This would be the first meeting between the two. However, the Indian challenge ended in doubles with the exit of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. The duo lost to ninth seeds Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi of Malaysia 22-20, 18-21, 15-21. Earlier, Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy suffered a 13-21, 15-21 loss to Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai of Thailand in women’s doubles.

Defending champion Sindhu raised her game to avenge her last two defeats to the Thailand shuttler. Chochuwong had defeated Sindhu at the All England and at the recent BWF World Tour Finals. In the next round Sindhu will face Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei. Tai overcame Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland 21-10, 19-21, 21-11.
