Normally, fertilisation of the egg and sperm happens in the fallopian tube of the uterus and the resulting embryo is transferred to the uterine cavity, where it gets embedded in the uterine wall and develops. This is called implantation. In situations where implantation happens at sites other than the uterine cavity, it is called an ectopic pregnancy.

An ectopic pregnancy can be life-threatening, as it results in a rupture and massive blood loss, endangering the woman’s life. 95 per cent of ectopic pregnancies occur due to implantation in the fallopian tube itself.

If the embryo implants at the site of a previous cesarean, it is called scar ectopic. It accounts for 6 per cent of ectopic pregnancies and 0.15 per cent of all pregnancies.

Due to a rise in cesarean section rates, the incidence of scar ectopic is also increasing. 52 per cent of scar ectopic occur after 1 cesarean section surgery.
