Resilient Virat Leads The Show On Truncated Day
The Times of India Delhi|June 20, 2021
India’s top batsmen were satisfyingly resilient and adaptive in Southampton on Saturday. Wearing black armbands in honor of Milkha Singh, they weathered a relentless storm of the ever-improving seam and swing bowling from the Kiwi pacers on a day of thrust and parry in the English gloom.

It was a stop-start affair as expected, and the bad light stoppages in the last session proved extremely frustrating for both players and spectators, who booed each time the teams walked off.

When play was finally called off, a supremely focused and restrained Virat Kohli (batting on 44 off 124b; 1x4), in the company of Ajinkya Rahane (batting on 29 off 79), had survived the constantly swinging Dukes ball and probing lengths to take India to 146/3 in 64.4 overs, marking a compelling first day of actual play in the WTC Final.

India scored slower than anticipated although it enabled them to preserve wickets on a pitch with seam and bounce. “Anything more than 250-plus will be a reasonable score here,” India's batting coach Vikram Rathour said after play.

Kyle Jamieson, who stood out in the Kiwi pace pack, particularly against Kohli, said, “I think there is still some opportunity to score runs although there is some help. The Indians have shown you need to stay patient.”
