New Delhi: The number of birds at National Zoological Park, or Delhi Zoo, has gone up significantly this season. However, the species density has reduced and not a single migratory bird has been sighted, an annual census has revealed.

The overall bird count is 1,279 this time against 871 last year. A total of 16 species — all local — have been spotted, down from 18 last time. Most of the birds (1,032) are painted storks (against 641 last year), according to the Asian Waterbird Census, 2022.

The painted stork — a local migratory bird from Terai region of the Himalayan foothills and extending into Southeast Asia — usually breeds in the monsoon and hatches from August to September. The birds can fly after three to four months and by peak winter, they usually leave the region, experts said.
