Toyota has retained its top sales spot last year despite soaring certificate of entitlement (COE) prices, with runner-up BMW closing in.
In fact, the gap between Toyota and BMW is narrower at 16.6 per cent (it was 25.1 per cent in 2020), compared with the 21.5 per cent difference between BMW and second runner-up Mercedes-Benz.
Hyundai replaced Honda in the No. 4 spot, while the latter dropped to No 9.
Nissan rose from No. 9 in 2020 to clinch the No. 7 position.
The others in the tally maintained their rankings, with Volkswagen tying with Mitsubishi for the 10th position.
In total, the top 10 brands have dominated the bestselling list in recent years, but their combined market share dipped by 2.6 percentage points to 61.2 per cent. Among the bestselling brands, most either lost or maintained their market share. Only Toyota, BMW, Hyundai and Nissan grew their market share.
