So his supporters were deeply disappointed when he backtracked last week on three farm laws because he said he could not convince a section of the country’s farmers.
The move has also raised questions over how this could impact the Prime Minister’s image even as his party leaders maintained it showed Mr Modi as a sensitive and responsive leader.
Tens of thousands of farmers, camping on the border of the capital Delhi in makeshift tents through extreme heat and cold, were seen to have been successful in forcing Mr Modi – who is not known for reversing policy decisions – to withdraw the controversial farm laws.
Delhi saw the reforms as crucial to get private investments, but the farmers feared the move would open them up to exploitation by private players.
