A signboard near the Chennai Central Metro station renaming EVR Periyar Salai sparks controversy
‘GRAND WESTERN TRUNK ROAD' ROW GOES NORTH

The 14-km road connecting two vital transport installations in the city – is it called EVR Periyar Salai or the Grand Western Trunk Road? A signboard recently put up by the Highways department near the Chennai Central Metro station called the arterial road ‘Grand Western Trunk Road’ (since defaced with black paint), and it has sparked a controversy, with Opposition parties slamming the move.

Originally called the Poonamallee High Road, the highway was renamed EVR Periyar Salai by former chief minister MG Ramachandran during the birth centenary celebrations of the Dravida Kazhagam founder in 1979.
