The air quality in Chennai, for the fourth year in a row, is found to have exceeded permissible PM2.5 levels by 1.1, to 3.8 times, posing serious health risk, revealed a study conducted by an advocacy group, healthy energy Initiative (India).
Researchers collected 24hour samples from 20 locations across Chennai in February-March 2021 for the study, and the analysis showed that the air quality was ‘poor’ to ‘unhealthy’ when compared to the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for PM2.5 of 60µg/m3. Among the samples taken, Thirusulam (near airport), Parry’s corner and Vyasarpadi (near fishing harbour) locations had PM2.5 levels between 228 and 176 µg/m3, categorised as “very unhealthy — people with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children should avoid all physical activity”.
