While the city has been testing close to 30,000 people everyday in the period, the daily cases too have reduced from 7,149 on May 10 to 6,150 on May 17; a considerable 1,000 cases drop. This indicates that the virus spread in the city is gradually on a decline. Public health experts clarify that lockdown may not be the only reason for this phenomenon.
Former director of public health, Dr K Kolandasamy said, “Not just the lockdown, but the vaccination drive and possible herd immunity, too could have caused the decline.
He added that since there has been a massive rise in infections, it may also have brought in immunity among some sections, while the simultaneous vaccine coverage may have helped in stopping the cases from spiking.
