ISL: Bio bubble failure, mental fatigue force players to speak up
The Indian Express Delhi|January 16, 2022
IN ITS carefully-crafted image over the last eight years, there haven't been many open voices of dissent in the Indian Super League (ISL). Hence, when a player called the competition 'adulterated', claimed that players are losing interest and desire to compete and are just waiting for the ‘league to end', the focus shifted. It went from on the field - where the matches have been severely affected by Covid - to life inside the ISL bubble in Goa, which India captain Sunil Chhetri said was 'hard' and 'frustrating'.

FC Goa talisman Edu Bedia, who has made close to 100 appearances for the club, took to social media to vent out his frustration after the league called off Saturday's match between ATK Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC owing to an outbreak of Covid19 cases within the teams.

Bedia was incensed that Goa were forced to play their match against NorthEast United on Friday, despite nine Covid-19 cases in their camp. In fact, the team had learnt of four new cases in the 24 hours leading up to Friday's game, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

So when the ISL organisers postponed the match between ATK Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru, it created confusion over the league's rules for dealing with this issue. “(sic) Yesterday we played with 9 casualties due to covid. Today, for the second consecutive match, another team suspended its game for the same reason. Can someone explain this to me? Adulterated competition," Bedia wrote on his Instagram story.
