THE Government has been accused of wasting billions of pounds of defence spending that could have reversed cuts to Devonport-based warships.
Plymouth Labour MP Luke Pollard claimed the lost £13 billion was caused by mismanagement in the Ministry of Defence and by Government ministers.
Mr Pollard said it was “leading to deeper cuts in our armed forces and reduced capabilities”.
The figure was revealed in a Dossier of Waste in the Ministry of Defence, published by the Labour Party on Wednesday.
It claimed to have found evidence of at least £13bn of taxpayers’ money lost in 67 confirmed cases since 2010.
A Government defence review announced last March that the two oldest Devonport-based frigates would be retired and the savings used to pay for the next generation of warships.
