It is no secret that the diving prodigy struggled during his school years in the city, with a very public move from Eggbuckland Community College to Plymouth College at the age of 15.
Tom and his family spoke out at the time to condemn the behaviour of other students who targetted him after his return from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Speaking at a Q&A book launch for his new memoir Coming Up For Air, the 2 7 - year-old reflected on his time at school and explained how his sexuality, while not being the main target for bullies, left him feeling ‘different’ and alienated from his peers.
“Growing up, I’d always known I was different from other kids. In my primary school, I was one of five boys in a class of thirty,” Tom wrote in his memoir.
“I always got on well with everyone, was a class clown, and was always proud of the fact I had ‘two boyfriends and three girlfriends.’
