A PETITION has been launched to secure better lighting in city parks as part of a push to make places safer for women.
As the first meeting of the Violence Against Women and Girls Commission was being held on Monday – to review what can be done to prevent violence – campaigners said they want to see swift action taken rather than just more words.
Charlotte Holloway, Women’s Safety campaigner and Labour candidate for Drake ward, launched the petition and highlighted the issue of poor lighting, especially at Central Park, which is frequently used by female runners and dog walkers. She said there was increased concern over poor lighting in many of the city parks and the matter has become all the more important following the tragic murder of teenager BobbiAnne McLeod.
