Backlash over plan to cut bus shelters

A PLYMOUTH MP has condemned plans to axe 200 bus shelters across the city, saying women and girls must feel safe while waiting for public transport.

Luke Pollard, the MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, has condemned in Parliament Plymouth Conservatives' plan to cut more than 200 bus shelters.

Plymouth's Conservative-led city council is planning to scrap 211 out of 627 bus shelters, a move that has led to some residents starting petitions.

Mr Pollard raised the matter in Parliament on Thursday, asking the Transport Minister if he agreed that Plymouth City Council must stop and consider the impact this will have on people waiting for a bus.

Mr Pollard said: "After the recent tragedies we've seen in Plymouth, we have to do everything we can to make sure women and girls feel safe while waiting for a bus.
