Joao Souza knocked out third seed Gialuca Mager 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the second round of the Tata Open Maharashtra ATP Tennis Championship, at the Balewadi Sports Complex here on Wednesday.

In an encounter which saw 27 aces, the Portuguese fired 15 to emerge winner in 2 hours and 13 minutes tussle, in the championship organised by the Maharashtra Lawn Tennis Association.

Although the winner did have six double faults, his first serve caught the ranked player Mager off guard. With this win Sousa books his place in the last eight.

Sousa, one of the top Portuguese players, was quite content with the game and hopes to make the most of it here in the South Asian only ATP tournament.

Regarded as the best Portuguese tennis player of all me, former World No. 28 Sousa looked solid as he recomposed himself, winning the second set comfortably and then knocking out the World No. 67 Italian in the final set tie-breaker.
