A 33-year-old resident of Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has tested positive for the Omicron variant, the first such case in Maharashtra and the fourth in India.

According to officials, the traveller was not vaccinated and has mild symptoms.

Meanwhile, three new overseas arrivals in Mumbai have tested COVID positive, taking the total number of such cases to 17; of these, contact tracing is on in the case of four.

“The presence of the super variant was confirmed in the case of the 33-year-old after laboratory investigation; he had arrived in Mumbai on November 24 from Cape Town, South Africa, through Dubai and Delhi,” said Pratibha Panpatil, Chief Medical Officer of the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC). He had tested negative in an RT-PCR test conducted 72 hours prior to his inter-connected flight from Cape Town to Mumbai.
