Before 2021 ended, India set out to South Africa to make history. They hadn’t won a Test series in the Rainbow Nation and it was a good chance to rectify that record. Almost on cue, speedster Anrich Nortje was ruled out of the series, meaning India had to contend with one South African pacer less.

Year 2021 was a memorable for Indian cricket, especially in Tests. They had managed to defeat Australia at the Gabba, their citadel, and had also beaten England at The Oval to lead the five-test series 2-1. In the first Test against South Africa, the Virat Kohli-led unit also breached fortress Centurion and were truly on a mission to do the never-before.

Start on sour note

This, despite having a heated build up. Kohli was removed as India’s ODI captain and it was through a footnote in the press release announcing the Test squad for the South Africa series. Moreover, the pre-departure press conference had Kohli contradicting claims of BCCI president Sourav Ganguly about being asked to reconsider the relinquishment of T20I captaincy.
