The NHS enters this winter with official figures showing it has 5,500 fewer beds than last year – amid claims the true shortage it faces is nearer 10,000.

NHS ‘Has 10k Beds Shortfall'
NHS bosses said the year-on-year drop was due to moving beds apart to meet Covid-19 infection control measures.

Others blamed 10 years of Tory austerity, under which general bed numbers fell from 108,349 in 2010 to 94,787 now.
