NEW DELHI: India hit a new Coronavirus infection record with 1,68,912 new cases, the highest single-day rise so far, taking the total tally of cases to 1,35,27,717, according to the Union Health ministry data updated on Monday.
This puts India ahead of Brazil to record the secondhighest number of Covid cases in a day.
According to the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) data, India has overtaken Brazil, which is now at the third spot in the Covid tally with 1,34,82,023 cases. The US has the highest number of cases at 3,11,98,055 while globally 13,61,36,954 cases have been reported.
Union minister Sanjeev Balyan said he has tested positive following which he has isolated himself.
In a tweet on Sunday night, he said: “I got tested for COVID-19 after showing some symptoms while campaigning for West Bengal elections. The report is positive and I have isolated myself.”
The national COVID-19 recovery rate has fallen below 90 per cent. The active cases have surpassed the 12-lakh mark while the death toll increased to 1,70,179 with 904 daily new fatalities, the highest since October 18, 2020, the data updated at 8 am showed.
