The Reds announced Bruno Fernandes had extended his contract by only a year on April 1, even though his previous deal had a final expiry date of 2026.
The 27-year-old was rewarded with a salary raise after two productive years following his signing from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 but the Portuguese’s performance level has plummeted this season and his form since the renewal has been particularly poor.
Anthony Elanga signed an improved contract during Rangnick’s first month as interim manager, while Anthony Martial and Phil Jones inked new deals while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was still caretaker manager.
Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw signed new contracts in Jose Mourinho’s final months even though the then manager had searched for a left back to replace the England international for 18 months. Smalling was loaned out to Roma at the start of the following season by Solskjaer.
