LIVE insects in rice, snails in a packet of spinach and glass in soup were just a few of the complaints received by food safety chiefs last year.
There was 2,772 reports from customers to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland’s Advice Line in 2020, with 34% relating to unfit food and 30% to poor hygiene standards.
However, last year’s complaints saw a decrease on the 3,460 reported in 2019.
The dip in numbers reflects the impact of Covid-19, with many food services forced to shut up shop for long periods.
All complaints received by the FSAI in 2020 were followed up and investigated by food inspectors.
