The Limerick man was something of a left field appointment after Micheal Donoghue, the county’s 2017 All-Ireland winning boss, surprisingly departed following the 2019 Championship having endured what appeared to have been a strained relationship with the county board.

O’Neill (inset) guided Galway to last year’s All-Ireland semi-final where they came closer to beating his native county than any other team did over the course of the last two Championship campaigns.
