The 72-year-old man is in hospital after being attacked at Celbridge, Co Kildare.
He was brought to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown, where his condition is described as serious but stable.
A number of suspects left the scene on foot - one was on a scrambler bike, stolen from the property.
In a follow-up search, gardai arrested a 17-year-old boy early on Wednesday and he was taken to Leixlip Garda Station.
