CALLUM MCGREGOR insists SPFL chiefs were right to shelve the New Year Old Firm -as the derby needs a full house to showcase Scottish football.

The Celtic captain is on board with the decision to bring forward the winter shutdown after the Scottish government ordered stadiums to restrict crowds to just 500 amid the Omicron outbreak panic.

The Premiership will now shut down after the Boxing Day round of fixtures - with a return set for January 17, with the derby showdown now pencilled in for Wednesday, February 2. McGregor is hoping the circuit break does the job and clubs will be allowed to have fans back in immediately - as he admitted close doors games are the pits.
