Sanita Puspure was hailed as the “spearhead” for Irish rowing over the past decade as she narrowly missed out on a place in the women’s single sculls final.

Team manager Feargal O’Callaghan added: “Sanita was flying the flag for Irish rowing when no one else was.”

Puspure, 39, finished fifth in her semi-final, meaning she is now in the B final. The disappointment came just after Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy claimed gold in the men’s lightweight double sculls final.
