This week’s Dell Technologies matchplay is a departure from the recent grind of stroke play and it’s normally a graveyard for the favourites.
Rory McIlroy was the last favourite to win the tournament at Harding Park in 2015.
Matchplay has a certain appeal , but sponsors get nervous with the format because there’s no guarantee that star names will make the business end of the week.
It’s risk and reward terrain though and an added spice is the fact the Ryder Cup is now only six months away. Certain results are sure to grab the attention of the respective captains.
