Celebrated amateur breaks his duck over National fences – and dreams of a follow-up in today’s main event

PATRICK MULLINS rode a long-awaited first winner over the Grand National fences as Livelovelaugh ran away with the Randox Topham Handicap Chase.

Not one of the victories that made Mullins, 31, the most prolfic amateur rider in National Hunt racing history was gained over the famous obstacles.

But he finally reached the milestone as 15-2 shot Livelovelaugh, trained by his father Willie and running in the colours of Rich Ricci, made all the running for a four-and-a-half length win.

“Ever since I was a kid, I watched horses do that and thought, ‘What a thrill it must be!’ ”said the winning jockey.
