TWO Irish crew members on a yacht had to be rescued off the coast of Portugal after their vessel was attacked and disabled by killer whales.

The man aged 49 and 21-year-old woman launched a Mayday call after the orcas damaged the rudder leaving them unable to navigate.

Their boat was towed to safety in the port of Sines, around 150km south of Lisbon following the incident on Saturday.
