As the World Health Organisation declared America the looming epicentre of the Covid19 crisis, Donald Trump defied medics by saying he wants “the country open by Easter“.
Despite coronavirus cases in the US soaring, the president insisted things would be back to normal within a couple of weeks, saying: “I think it’s possible, why not?”
He added: “Look, Easter’s a very special day for me. And I see it sort of in that timeline that I’m thinking about. Wouldn’t it be great to have all those churches full?
“I think Easter Sunday and you’ll have packed churches all over our country. I think it would be a beautiful time. And it’s just about the timeline I think is right.”
Florida Congresswoman Donna Shalala branded Mr Trump’s insistence on returning to normal life by April 12 “dangerous and immoral”.
She said: “He defies ethical standards. No American believes we should choose the economy over human life. The president is putting human life at risk because he wants the economy to get back.”
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said he would defy Mr Trump and would not revoke restrictions in the state till it was safe. He said: “We can’t wish coronavirus away.
“Some are putting out hope of us being back in churches by Easter, of restarting the economy in a couple of weeks.
“I think we owe it to everybody to be straightforward that in Los Angeles, we will not be back to that normal in that short period of time. I have said to be prepared for a couple of months like this.”
