The Health Department said a woman from the east had died while the number of cases jumped by 191 in 24 hours.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said: “I would like to extend my condolences to the family and friends of this patient.”

The news came as it was revealed Junior and Leaving Cert oral exams were to be scrapped and Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy was in self-isolation after a trip overseas. It was revealed yesterday there have now been 557 cases in Ireland – an increase of 191 in just 24 hours.

Dr Holohan did not want to go into personal details about the death, but added the average age of people getting the Covid-19 virus is 43 which he described as “a youngish profile”.

At a press briefing in the Department of Health on Baggot Street in Dublin, he said: “It is too early to see any impact of our social distancing measures.

“This data underscores the importance of younger people to rigorously follow public health advice and social distancing measures.”

Director of Public Health Medicine in the HSE Dr Breda Smyth added: “Healthcare workers are at the frontline of this pandemic.

“While it is heartening to see social distancing measures taken seriously across society, this must continue in order to protect the most vulnerable and support our healthcare staff throughout this pandemic.”

Of the 350 cases of Coronavirus that have been analysed in detail to date, 55% have been male and 45% female.
