COUNCIL TO REMOVE TUAM SITE PLACARDS

PLACARDS put up without permission on the site of a former Mother and Baby Home will be taken down, Galway County Council has said.

Four signs were erected on the walls surrounding a garden in Tuam where “significant quantities” of human remains are buried.

They contain the text of apologies and remarks on the Mother and Baby Home, made by the Bon Secours Order, the Catholic Archbishop of Tuam and Galway County Council and President Michael D Higgins.

Local historian Catherine Corless told Liveline the signs were commissioned by locals who had no intention to offend anybody.
