392 Garda officers assigned to investigate cases of alleged domestic abuse
GARDAI responded to more than 48,000 domestic abuse incidents last year - a 10% increase on 2020, figures revealed yesterday.
Officers said there were 8,600 charges which involved an element of ill treatment in the home, a rise of 13% compared to 2020.
In excess of 4,250 cases were linked to breaches of domestic violence act orders which is 6% up on the previous year.
In response to rising domestic abuse, Operation Faoiseamh was established in April 2020 – the month after the first Covid-19 lockdown by the Garda National Protective Services Bureau.
