Six things to look out for in today's R-Day parade

A REVAMPED CENTRAL VISTA AVENUE

People will get the first glimpse of the redeveloped Central Vista Avenue this Republic Day. The area has been made more accessible and pedestrian-friendly - the unpaved pathways along the Rajpath have been paved, cross pathways have been constructed in the lawns, while and signages have been put in place. The heritage poles that lined Rajpath have now been refurbished and reinstalled. The canals on both sides of Rajpath have been reconstructed and 16 permanent bridges have been constructed over it. For the first time, overhead cables for CCTV cameras and speakers will not be visible as they have relocated in underground utility ducts. While a large part of the 1608 crore Central Vista Avenue is ready, the balance work, including construction of underpasses and amenity blocks will be completed after January 26.

HISTORY OF 61 CAVALRY IN FULL DISPLAY

A column of the Indian Army's 61 Cavalry, one of the world's last remaining horse-mounted cavalry regiments, will be among the 16 contingents taking part in the parade this time. The contingent, led by Major Mrityunjay Singh Chouhan, will sport the uniform of the erstwhile Gwalior Lancers, in a throwback to the days of yore. The column will consist of 39 horses. The regiment was raised in Jaipur in 1953 by putting together mounted elements of six cavalry regiments, including Gwalior Lancers. The regiment holds around 300 horses 200 in Jaipur and 100 with one of its squadrons in Delhi Cantonment. Rich in sporting history, the regiment accounts for one Padma Shri, 10 Arjuna Awards, 11 Asian Games medals and a raft of representations at the Polo World Cup and international equestrian competitions. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had personal liking for Prithviraj, a charger from the regiment in the 1950s.
