MEERUT: Three Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators who were named as accused in cases related to the 2013 communal riots in Muzaffarnagar lost their constituencies in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, results for which were announced on Thursday.
Sangeet Som, two-time MLA from Sardhana constituency, lost to Samajwadi Party candidate Atul Pradhan by a margin of over 18,000 votes.
Suresh Rana, Rana, another accused in the riots, and the sugarcane minister in the outgoing state government, also lost his Thana Bhawan seat to Rashtriya Lok Dal's Ashraf Ali Khan. Another riot accused, Umesh Malik was defeated by Rajpal Singh Baliyan of the Rashtriya Lok Dal from the Budhana constituency.
