NEW DELHI/NOIDA/GURUGRAM: There were widespread complaints of harassment of people in quarantine, health care professionals and flight crews by members of housing societies and landlords on Tuesday over panic linked to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19), a development that prompted Union home minister Amit Shah to order action against those ostracising such people.
Shah’s order came after resident doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) sought the government’s intervention, saying that their colleagues were facing eviction from their homes by landlords who feared that the health care professionals could be infected by SARS-CoV-2, which causes Covid-19.
In a letter to Shah, the AIIMS Resident Doctors Association said many staffers were “stranded on roads” with all their belonging. Shah later spoke to Delhi Police chief SN Shrivastava and asked him to take action against those harassing doctors and nurses across the Capital.
The home minister also spoke to the AITMS body and assured them of strict actions.
“We spoke to the home minister and the commissioner of police. They have assured us that any issue of ostracisation will be taken seriously and immediate action will be taken,” said Dr Adarsh Pratap Singh, president of AIIMS RDA.
A senior Delhi Police official, who was aware of the developments and spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “We have not got any complaint in this regard sofar. If we get a complaint, then necessary action will be taken.”
Union health minister Harsh Vardhan also responded to the reports by saying that he was “deeply anguished” at the ostracisation of medical staff.
