Kerala puts ‘draconian' Police Act on hold

The Kerala government has put on hold an ordinance curtailing media freedom that governor Arif Mohammed Khan promulgated this week.

TRIVANDRUM:

The new law authorised police to arrest and prosecute those who publish “any matter which is threatening, abusive, humiliating or defamatory” without a complaint.

Many public intellectuals, jurists and even a retired state police chief had come out strongly against the law which could be easily misused against independent media.

They included some of the vocal supporters of the ruling Let Democratic Front (LDF) led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPM.
