The southern state of Kerala now leads both in daily new cases and recoveries as India announced another milestone in its fight against COVID-19.
India’s total caseload has now crossed 8.51 million, which is second only to the US (10.19).
According to the federal health authority, India’s daily caseload has gone below 50,000 with only 45,674 people being tested positive for the virus during the last 24 hours.
New daily cases have been trending downward since Oct.15 in all states with a few exceptions like Kerala, which still shows a case-positivity rate above 11 per cent.
Keeping with the trend of average recoveries outnumbering new cases, 49,082 patients have recovered, a trend observed for the 37th day.
This has played a pivotal role in pushing down the active caseload which is presently 512,665, a health department release said on Sunday.
They contribute only 6.03 per cent of India’s total positive cases, indicating a sustained downward trend, it added.
Kerala stands third in the active cases among Indian states with 87,823 patients still under treatment after Maharashtra (247,468) and Karnataka (115,823).
