Kerala’s Kozhikode, Trivandrum and Kollam districts have more than 10,000 COVID-19 patients each currently under treatment, according to the state health ministry data.
Ernakulam has 12,222 active cases followed by the capital district, where 11,184 COVID-19 patients are undergoing treatment, and Kozhikode with 11,020 patients.
Of the patients undergoing treatment, 715 are critical in intensive care units (ICU), while 166 are on ventilator support.
The state is now facing a shortage in the availability of ICUs and ventilators according to reports from districts.
Meanwhile, India reported 63,509 fresh COVID-19 infections in 24 hours, taking the tally to 72,39,389 on Wednesday.
This showed an increase of 8,000 cases announced on Tuesday.
There were 730 deaths in one day taking the overall toll to 1,10,586.
On Wednesday, Kerala, which now lags far behind other major states, reported 6,244 more cases and 7,792 recoveries.
