Everton are looking up while Southampton might be nervously peeking over their shoulders soon.

Richarlison’s early goal – his fifth in five games in all competitions – was the only difference here.

But these two sides look to be going in different directions.

The Toffees got their first win at home in the Premier League since December 19.

Ten days ago they beat Liverpool at Anfield for the first time in nearly 22 years and a few days later got planning permission for a new stadium.

But Everton needed to improve their form at their current home of Goodison Park to stand any chance of making this a successful season overall.

Now they are just two points off fourth-placed West Ham with a game in hand. They do also have Liverpool and Chelsea ahead of them in the race for Champions League qualification.

But the mood is very optimistic on the blue half of Merseyside after recent events. Not so much on the south coast, though. Southampton have now won just one league game in 14 attempts as they slide down the table.
